About Lyc-V, Loupes and the Clans

Lyc-V is the general name given to the shapeshifter virus. All shapeshifters - unless their power to transform comes from a divine source - have this virus.
The virus itself "steals" genetic makeup of the organism it infects and it can infect both human and animal alike. Basically let's say we have a wolf. A wolf becomes infected with the virus. The virus prospers and incubates and the wolf becomes a carrier. If he then mauls a human, and if the human organism can handle the presence of Lyc-V, the human becomes a shapeshifter who shifts into a wolf.
In general Lyc-V produces two types of shapeshifters: Were-animal and Animal-were.
Lyc-V is surprisingly hard to catch. Mostly it's passed on through generations. But the virus itself experiences cycles. Sometimes the infected organisms, be they animals or humans, experience a "viral bloom", where the virus begins to rapidly mutate, reproduces at an accelerated rate, and flood the organism with hormones. Such a being is a primal candidate for becoming a loup.
The best way to get infected with Lyc-V is to be bitten by a loup.
Loups are very contagious. There is no turning back from loupism - once you went loup, you're done. You will torture, kill, rape, and feed on human meat. There is no such thing as a compassion or mercy. Loups have no capacity for empathy. They're sadistic and incredibly dangerous. Pack usually puts them down.
Unfortunately the percentage of loups is a lot higher in humans, particularly in wolf clan. Almost one out of every four children goes loup at puberty and has to be killed.
Everything comes with a price.
To maintain their humanity, many shapeshifters follow The Code, a collection of writings which the shapeshfiters treasure. The Code outlines principles of shapeshifter behavior and teaches control and discipline through mental exercise. The shapeshifters who follow the Code view themselves as free of the burden of the Beast and refer to themselves as Free People of the Code.
There are many types of shapeshifters and most are mammal.
Andrea, if she weren't hiding her nature would be part of The Pack - a confederation of shapeshitre packs - and Clan Bouda. Counting only two dozen members, hyenas, or boudas as they like to be called, still wield a fair amount of influence within the Pack. Boudas are extremely violent fighters. They are prone to berserk rages, and other clansmen learn the hard way to steer clear. Boudas are also notoriously adventurous in their sexual explorations. Just like in nature, women dominate this clan, with men taking the secondary role. Boudas don't play fair. Common Pack wisdoms says that if you make an enemy of the boudas, you will never be forgiven. They will smile in your face and break your neck the second you look away.
